Unusual Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Unfamiliar Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes
  • * frequent infections

  • * cuts and bruises that take a long time to heal

  • * high blood pressure

  • * headaches

  • * stomach pains

  • * slow-healing sores or cuts

  • * itching of the skin (usually around the vaginal or groin area)

  • * frequent yeast infections

  • * recent weight gain

  • * velvety dark skin changes of the neck, armpit and groin, called acanthosis nigricans

  • * decreased vision

  • * impotency

  • * increased hunger (especially after eating)

  • * dry mouth

  • * fatigue (weak, tired feeling)

  • * loss of consciousness (rare)

  • * red, swollen, tender gums

  • * urinary tract infection

  • * nausea and vomiting because of ketoacidosis (acute symptom)

  • * dehydration and low blood levels of potassium

  • * altered mental status (depression, irritability)

Some of these symptoms are also symptoms of other diseases, but if we are experiencing a number of these signs it should alert us to the possibility that we may be suffering from diabetes.

Often a person may not even be aware they have diabetes until the symptoms or the complications become so severe that they cann't be ignored.
