Guidelines Blood Sugar Levels

Guidelines blood sugar levels tell us if our diabetes is under control. The key to keeping our blood glucose levels in control is by monitoring.

It has been estimated that by lowering our A1c level by 1%, we will prevent some diabetic complications by 40%.

If our blood sugar levels stay high for a long period of time we can damage our eyes, kidneys, nerves, and blood vessels.

The following table is the recommended Canadian blood glucose levels for people with diabetes.*

AICFasting blood glucose/ blood glucose before meals (mmol/L) Blood glucose two hours after eating (mmol/L)
Target for most patients with diabetes ≤7.0%4.0 to 7.0 5.0 to 10
Normal range≤6.0% 4.0 to 6.05.0 to 8.0

The two charts below use blood glucose targets set by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for most people with diabetes.

Target blood glucose levels for most people with diabetes My targets
Before meals 70 to 130 mg/dL*
1 to 2 hours after the start of a meal Less than 180 mg/dL

Also, you should ask your doctor for a blood test called the A1C at least twice a year. The A1C will give you your average blood glucose for the past 3 months.

Target A1C result for people with diabetes My target
Less than 7 percent

Remember, guidelines blood sugar levels are just that, guidelines. Each one of us is different, so make sure that you check with your doctor or health care provider for the target range that is good for you.

*Note: The above chart is based on the Canadian Diabetes Ass'n 2008 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes in Canada.
